High Performance Automobiles and What it Costs to Own Them

One thing that most people overlook when switching from their modest compacts, sub-compacts, or sedans over to higher performance automobiles is that the sticker price is hardly indicative of what it will really cost to own that vehicle. Unlike the sticker price that can be haggled over, the true cost of ownership cannot. When in the market for high performance vehicles, expect your wallet to take a heavier hit for things like gas, maintenance and upkeep whatever your reason for buying it. Expect that one of the first things to change will be how much you spend on tires alone. Cars that are fresh from the showroom floor often come in all-season tires that can be driven in a variety of road and weather conditions. They are a compromise for all situations and can only be expected to perform acceptably. High performance automobiles on the other hand require high performance tires. These tires provide better traction and grip on dry pavement and are best for maneuvering at high speeds and faster acceleration due to a soft rubber composition. Unfortunately the material that these tires are made of to provide that added grip com at a cost of a shorter lifespan and will wear off much faster than other types of tires. Unlike sedans, where you’ll only have to change tires around every 50,000 miles, expect to change them every 20,000 miles with a high performance car. High performance automobiles also consume much more fuel in order to deliver the performance you would expect from this kind of car. If you can get as much as 20 miles per gallon then you’re probably one of the luckier ones. You can go 5 more miles to a gallon in a four cylinder sedan, so expect 20% more when it comes to fuel requirement. Also, the type of gas that these cars require will cost more. Mid-grade and regular unleaded are no longer your options when having your car filled at the pump. Expect to pay $.20 more for premium gasoline than you would normally be accustomed to, even with gas at reasonable prices. Insurance is also a requirement you’ll need to look at for your brand new car. A car has a higher probability of being involved in an accident if it’s been designed for higher speeds, so expect higher rates when shopping around for car insurance. With automobiles of this type you will be required to be in the shop more often. These kinds of cars have more amenities and new technology built-in. The more things there are to go wrong with, the greater the probability that it will.
