Drink Driving Can Cause You To Lose Your Driving Licence

Drink driving is something we all know can wreck lives but Simon Thorp of Rustington has just experienced how bad an effect it can have. Mr. Thorp had a job as a gritter lorry driver but has now lost this job along with his driving licence. After pleading guilty to driving with an excess of alcohol in his system at Worthing Magistrates’ Court, he received his 12 month driving ban.

Worthing Council have a problem now as Mr. Thorp’s sentence means that he can no longer do his job, thus reducing the already minor amount of gritter lorry drivers available. They will now have to sort something out quickly especially as the weather has taken a turn for the worse.

Mr. Thorp had spent the day at the Worthing Remembrance Sunday event as his father had been in the services and had died earlier that year. He had left his car parked on the main road in Surrey Street but when he met friends he went to the pub and had three pints. He went home on the bus but returned later to move the car from the main road. Police decided to stop the car and breathalyse Mr. Thorp as they were slightly suspicious due to the number of people in the car. Police decided to take Mr. Thorp to the station for a blood test as the results on the breathalyser were too low and this showed that the amount of alcohol in his system was over the legal limit by 14mg.

Mr. Thorp was fined £100 and was charged £55 in court costs and another £15 victim surcharge as well as losing his licence. However due to the fact that Mr. Thorp had been driving his lorry for the last 20 years and could not read or write, the district judge Roger Ede told him that he could have his ban reduced by three months if he completed a Drivewise course.

It is irrelevant what type of driving license you currently have, if you are searching for a driving related job your future employer is within their rights to check what type of license you have . Driving licence verification is an issue you should take care about. Make sure you always hold the appropriate driving license before applying for a particular driving job.
